Animal DNA Testing

In the United States, approximately 4 out of every 10 households have at least one dog, and 3 in 10 have one or more cats. This close relationship between humans and domesticated animals has created another opportunity for crime scene investigation: Testing DNA evidence from animal sources.

DDC’s team of animal DNA scientists is experienced in performing a wide range of tests on animal DNA evidence. Using the strict chain of custody procedure and DDC's unique Dual Process™, all animal DNA tests are treated with the same stringency as human tests. This means that animal samples undergo DNA testing twice for complete confidence and accurate results.

There are three common situations in which animal DNA testing is useful.

Identifying a Silent Witness
Animal DNA evidence may be a crucial piece in solving a case where the suspect may have been extremely careful not to leave behind any of his or her biological traces. Shed hair, urine, and other biological samples from dogs or other animals may be transferred by a suspect from one place to another, such as from the home to the crime scene. DNA testing can help match such samples, connecting a suspect to a case.

Protecting Animals from Becoming Victims
All 50 U.S. states have laws against animal abuse, designating either felony or misdemeanor charges for perpetrators of such crimes. Additionally, animals may become victims of theft or accidents as well. DNA profiling and paternity DNA testing can assist in identifying animal victims, in the same way as human DNA testing is performed, and bring justice and security for pet owners and those concerned about the welfare of animals.

Promoting Animal Owner Responsibility
Animal-related accidents, injuries, and property damages rise as the number of pet owners increases in the United States. By promoting animal owner responsibility, cases of animal attacks on humans or other animals, accidents caused by unleashed or loose animals, and property damages caused by animals could be reduced or prevented. Local authorities can use DNA testing as a tool to enforce a safe environment for both its human and animal residents by identifying the animals involved in such incidents and holding their owners accountable for their damages.
